Increasing the population of rotifers in ponds is an effective strategy to address the challenge of feeding fry, reduce production costs, and enhance both survival rates and quality. The following are the key technical steps involved in this process:

1. Drain and Clean the Pond:

Rotifers can emerge from resting eggs that have been dormant in pond sediments for a long time. Studies show that there are more than 10 million such eggs per cubic meter of sediment, acting as a natural "seed bank" for annual rotifer populations. Draining the pond helps activate these eggs by increasing their exposure to warmth, while cleaning the pond removes predators that could threaten the emerging rotifers. Adding about 100 kg of quicklime per 667 square meters (1 mu) when the water temperature is between 20–25°C can further stimulate their growth. After 8–10 days, a significant number of rotifers will appear.

2. Apply Organic Fertilizers:

Research indicates that applying around 26 kg of cow dung or human waste per 667 square meters provides sufficient nutrients for rotifers to thrive. Additionally, adding 1% quicklime to the pond mud can help increase the number of resting eggs in the water, ensuring a more sustained rotifer population.

3. Control Predators:

Once rotifers begin to appear, leeches often follow, as they also feed on bacteria, algae, and organic matter. Leeches have a stronger filtering capacity than rotifers, which can lead to competition for food. If left unchecked, this can suppress rotifer growth. To manage this, a solution of trichlorfon at 0.5 mg/L can be applied throughout the pond to eliminate leeches while preserving the rotifer population. Combining this with organic fertilization can extend the peak period of rotifers from a natural 3–5 days to 15–20 days.

4. Refresh the Water Supply:

When conditions are favorable, rotifers reproduce rapidly. However, after reaching their peak within 1–2 days, they may face challenges like low oxygen levels. Without intervention, they may enter dormancy prematurely. By regularly adding fresh water, the density of rotifers is reduced, helping to prolong their active breeding phase and maintain a healthier environment for fry development.

This method not only supports a more stable and abundant supply of live feed but also contributes to sustainable aquaculture practices, making it a valuable technique for fish farmers looking to improve productivity and efficiency.
