A breakthrough in the treatment of pink eye has been made by researchers in the United States, who have discovered that gamma-globulin may offer a new and effective solution. Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is a common eye infection caused by adenoviruses, and it can affect people of all ages, including children, adults, and even newborns. While antibiotics are often used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, they are ineffective against viral causes, which can lead to serious complications if left untreated, such as vision loss or even blindness.
Dr. Andrea Gambotto from the University of Pittsburgh conducted studies that showed gamma-globulin's ability to neutralize viruses both in laboratory settings and in animal trials using rabbits with red eye disease. The results were promising, as even low concentrations of the substance were able to target multiple strains of the virus effectively. This discovery could potentially change the way viral conjunctivitis is treated, offering a safer and more targeted option for patients. The findings will be published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, marking an important step forward in ophthalmic research. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
