Tsinghua research team developed a brain pacemaker

Release date: 2008-01-23

A breakthrough in medical technology has been made by a research team at Tsinghua University, who have developed an advanced "brain pacemaker" designed to treat patients suffering from Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. This innovative device, which is set to be used in China soon, offers long-term and comprehensive treatment solutions for these conditions. The development was led by a multidisciplinary team from the university, combining expertise in electronics, information technology, software engineering, materials science, and manufacturing.

Although brain pacemakers were first introduced into clinical practice in China in 1999, the market has long been dominated by foreign companies, making the devices expensive and out of reach for many patients. Prices typically range from tens of thousands of yuan, with replacement costs reaching around 100,000 yuan after a few years. This high cost has significantly limited the widespread use of this life-changing technology.

To address these challenges, the Tsinghua team has created a new model that allows for wireless charging or external power supply, eliminating the need for frequent surgeries to replace the device. Once implanted, it can last a lifetime, reducing both the burden on patients and the overall healthcare costs. The second-generation implantable neurostimulator platform has already completed its key technical studies, marking a major step forward in domestic medical innovation.

Li Luming, director of the Institute of Human-Machine and Environmental Engineering at Tsinghua University's School of Aerospace and Aeronautics, emphasized that this brain pacemaker represents a true integration of multiple engineering disciplines. He described it as a product of both advanced technology and medical needs, highlighting the importance of collaboration between engineers and medical professionals.

As an expert involved in China's national medical device development plan, Li pointed out that localizing high-end medical equipment and reducing its cost is essential for addressing the issue of expensive healthcare. He believes such innovations will play a crucial role in shaping the future of China's pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. Universities, he added, have a vital responsibility in driving these advancements and ensuring they benefit the public.
