A recent study has shown that patients who have suffered an ischemic stroke and have a higher body mass index (BMI) tend to have a worse prognosis after being discharged from the hospital. Ischemic strokes occur when blood flow to the brain is blocked, leading to oxygen deprivation in brain tissue. Obesity and being overweight are not only significant risk factors for this condition, but they may also increase the likelihood of complications, which can negatively impact recovery outcomes. Researchers in Los Angeles found that individuals with higher BMIs were less likely to be discharged directly home following their stroke treatment. Dr. Tannaz Razinia and her team at UCLA Medical Center analyzed data from 451 patients hospitalized for ischemic stroke between 2003 and 2006. The average age of the participants was 65, and 28% were male. Patients were categorized into four BMI groups: severe obesity (BMI ≥ 35), moderate obesity (BMI 30–34), overweight (BMI 25–29), and normal weight (BMI ≤ 25). The findings revealed no significant difference in the length of hospital stay between the moderate and severe obesity groups (6.3 vs. 5.2 days). However, patients in the severe obesity group were significantly less likely to return home directly after discharge compared to those in the normal weight group (26% vs. 45%). Instead, more obese patients were transferred to rehabilitation centers, nursing facilities, or other medical institutions for continued care. Although 18 patients died during their hospitalization, there was no significant difference in in-hospital mortality across the BMI groups. The researchers concluded that obese patients with ischemic stroke had a less favorable discharge outcome compared to those with lower BMIs. This study highlights the importance of considering BMI when assessing post-stroke recovery and discharge planning. ——Midi Medical Network
