A breakthrough in medical technology has been made by a research team at Tsinghua University, who have developed an advanced "brain pacemaker" designed to treat patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. This innovative device, created through interdisciplinary collaboration across electronics, information technology, software, materials science, and manufacturing, is expected to become widely available in China in the near future. It offers long-term and comprehensive treatment solutions for patients, marking a significant step forward in domestic medical innovation.
Since its introduction to clinical practice in 1999, brain pacemakers have been primarily imported from abroad, with high costs limiting access for many patients. These devices typically cost tens of thousands of yuan, and replacement procedures after several years can add up to around 100,000 yuan, making them unaffordable for many. This situation has prompted the need for more affordable and locally developed alternatives.
In response to this challenge, the Tsinghua University team has developed a new generation of implantable neurostimulators that can be wirelessly charged or powered externally. Once implanted, these devices are designed to last a lifetime, significantly reducing long-term costs for patients. The second-generation platform has already completed key technical studies, bringing it one step closer to commercialization.
Li Luming, director of the Institute of Human-Machine and Environmental Engineering at Tsinghua University's School of Aerospace and Aeronautics, emphasized that the development of this brain pacemaker represents the integration of multiple engineering disciplines. He described it as a true example of applied engineering that not only meets technical standards but also adheres to medical principles and patient needs. According to Li, the project is a result of close collaboration between engineers and medical professionals.
As an expert involved in the national medical device technology development plan, Li highlighted the importance of localizing high-end medical devices to reduce costs and improve accessibility. He believes that such innovations will play a crucial role in China’s healthcare system, especially in addressing the issue of expensive medical care. Universities, he added, have a vital responsibility in driving these advancements forward.
