A groundbreaking study has revealed that gamma-globulin may offer a new treatment option for pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis. This condition, often caused by an adenovirus infection, affects people of all ages, including children, adults, and even newborns. While antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections, they have no impact on viral causes, which can lead to severe complications such as vision loss if left untreated.
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, led by Dr. Andrea Gambotto, discovered that gamma-globulin—derived from human blood plasma—can neutralize viruses in both laboratory settings and animal trials with rabbits suffering from red eye disease. Their findings showed that even low concentrations of the substance were highly effective against various viral strains. The results of this promising research will be published in the journal *Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science*, offering hope for a new therapeutic approach to viral eye infections. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
