Zinc and sulfur are essential trace elements that play a vital role in the growth, development, and reproductive health of livestock and poultry. These minerals are critical components of animal feed and cannot be omitted if optimal health and productivity are to be achieved. When animals suffer from zinc deficiency—either due to insufficient zinc in their diet or poor absorption—it can lead to a range of health issues. Affected animals may experience weight loss, thickened skin, and severe testicular atrophy in breeding stock, which results in reduced sperm production and lower fertility rates. In addition, growth and overall performance are significantly impacted. Therefore, ensuring adequate zinc levels in feed is crucial for the well-being and productivity of livestock and poultry. To address this, zinc sulfate or zinc carbonate is commonly added to feed. The required dosage varies depending on the species and age of the animals. For example, pigs under 20 kg typically require 50–60 mg of zinc per kilogram of feed, while hogs weighing 20–50 kg need 20–50 mg. Pregnant sows should receive 40–50 mg, and those over 50 kg may need up to 30–50 mg. Bulls and calves generally require 30–60 mg, while fattening calves benefit from 40–60 mg. Cattle and beef cattle need around 90–100 mg, sheep require about 30 mg, and birds benefit from 50–100 mg. If symptoms of deficiency appear, the dosage can be increased by 0.5 to 1 times. In addition to zinc, calcium levels in the feed must also be carefully managed. It's recommended to maintain calcium content between 0.65% and 0.75% to ensure effective zinc absorption and utilization. Sulfur is another important element in animal nutrition. It supports protein synthesis in muscle tissues, improving the quality and quantity of meat, eggs, and milk. Sodium sulfate is often used to increase sulfur content in feed, with a typical addition rate of 3–5 grams per kilogram of feed. This not only enhances the nutritional value but also improves productivity. For instance, pigs show an 8–11% increase in weight gain and better meat quality. Laying hens produce more eggs, long-haired rabbits yield more wool, and dairy cows see higher milk production and improved feed conversion efficiency.
