Before a cold front arrives, it's crucial to monitor weather forecasts from TV and radio stations. Keep a close eye on temperature fluctuations. In terms of management, carefully check the warmth of the greenhouse, the integrity of the plastic film, and the air vents. On sunny days, raise the greenhouse temperature to accumulate heat. Adjust ventilation times—reduce air release and cover the plants in the evening (around 9 AM) and early in the morning (around 4 PM). Place straw between the rows of vegetables and spray the foliage with a 0.3% solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate to reduce transpiration. These preparations should start 3–4 days before the cold weather hits.
Once the cold front arrives, avoid watering, spraying, or ventilating. Do not use bactericidal smoke agents or remove the mulch unless necessary, depending on the weather. If it's snowing or raining, keep the greenhouse covered temporarily. If the weather is cloudy, you can uncover the plants just before 9 AM and re-cover them by 4 PM. If the temperature inside the greenhouse drops below 6°C for melon vegetables or 4°C for eggplants around 8 AM, place 5–8 pots of charcoal fires inside to provide additional warmth.
After the cold spell ends, this is the most critical time for greenhouse crops. Prolonged low temperatures followed by sudden sunlight can cause stress to the plants. Don’t immediately uncover everything; gradually open the covers so the plants can adapt slowly from cold to warm conditions. If wilting has already occurred, spray the leaves with a "sweet and vinegar mixture" made by dissolving 0.5 kg of glucose and 0.5 kg of mature vinegar in 50 kg of warm water. Apply this solution every 2–3 days to help alleviate the wilting and support plant recovery. Taking these steps can significantly improve crop resilience and reduce damage during and after cold events.
