1. Deep application of nitrogen fertilizer is an effective method to improve nutrient efficiency. The depth of application can be adjusted depending on the amount of fertilizer used. For smaller quantities (5 to 10 kg per mu), it's recommended to apply the fertilizer at a depth of about 10 cm. When larger amounts are needed (20 to 25 kg per mu), applying it deeper—around 15 cm—helps reduce volatilization and enhances root absorption.
2. Soil type plays a key role in choosing the right type of nitrogen fertilizer. In calcareous soils with high pH, which tend to be alkaline, acidic or slightly acidic fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate or ammonium chloride are more suitable. These provide ammonium nitrogen, which helps balance soil pH. On the other hand, for acidic soils, physiological alkaline fertilizers like calcium nitrate should be used to help neutralize acidity and improve plant growth.
3. Crop type also influences the need for nitrogen. Cereal crops and leafy vegetables, such as tea and other vegetable crops, have a high demand for nitrogen during their growth stages and should be prioritized for nitrogen application. In contrast, leguminous crops, such as beans or clover, can fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic bacteria, so they only require a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer at the early growth stage to support initial development.
4. Climate conditions affect how effectively crops can absorb and utilize nutrients. Under normal weather conditions, plants typically have strong metabolic activity, allowing them to take up more nutrients from the soil. In such cases, a higher amount of nitrogen fertilizer can be applied. However, in adverse weather, such as excessive rain or drought, the crop’s ability to absorb nutrients may decrease, so it’s advisable to adjust the application rate accordingly.
5. Combining nitrogen fertilizer with other nutrients like phosphorus and potassium (NPK) is essential for balanced crop nutrition. Using organic fertilizers as a base fertilizer provides slow-release nutrients, while applying nitrogen as a top dressing ensures that the crop receives a timely boost during critical growth periods. This integrated approach not only improves yield but also enhances soil health and long-term productivity.
