In the process of growing vegetable seedlings, gardeners often face a common challenge: as the seedlings develop, weeds also grow rapidly, competing with them for nutrients and water, which can hinder the healthy growth of the plants. Manually removing weeds is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and it can also accidentally damage the young vegetable plants. To address this issue, using plastic film to suppress weeds before sowing seeds has proven to be an effective method.
The technique involves preparing the seedbed properly. First, the area should be exposed to sunlight to dry out the soil. Then, the ground is loosened and leveled. After that, the soil is either watered or briefly soaked and drained. Once the soil is moist but not waterlogged, it is tightly covered with a plastic sheet. The heat and moisture trapped under the plastic create an environment that accelerates weed germination and root growth. However, these weeds and their roots are quickly killed by the high temperature and steam inside the plastic cover.
After sealing the bed for about 3 to 4 days, the plastic is removed. At this point, most of the weeds have been eliminated, and the soil is ready for sowing vegetable seeds. This method significantly reduces weed competition, creating a cleaner and more favorable environment for the seedlings to grow. It’s a simple yet highly effective technique that saves time and improves the overall success rate of seedling cultivation.
