Due to time constraints, equipment limitations, and other conditions, maintenance of wheat combine harvesters often requires workers to use basic tools and methods. Therefore, it's essential to pay close attention to proper maintenance procedures:
(1) Rivets in the harvester’s knife assembly are typically formed through cold extrusion and should never be heated during installation. Heating can reduce the material’s strength. After riveting, a forming punch should be used to reinforce the blade and knife bar for better durability.
(2) Vulnerable parts such as pins, bushings, sleeves, and horns require careful handling. During maintenance, simply adding more grease is not a solution. If these parts wear beyond their limits over time, they can negatively impact the lifespan of other mechanical components. Regular inspection and timely replacement are crucial.
(3) When repairing shafts without a balancing machine, you can mount a thrust bearing on one end and clamp it in a lathe’s three-jaw chuck. The other end can be supported with a center rest. If the lathe is too short, a center rack can be used to secure the other end. Bearings should be properly aligned. If weights are needed, tighten them with screws rather than using electric welding, which may damage the structure.
(4) Due to the variety of materials used in repairs, sourcing new parts can be difficult. In such cases, old shafts can be repurposed. Most Chinese shafts are made from 45# carbon steel. If heat treatment is required, and under poor conditions, oxygen and earth furnaces can be used to heat the part until it turns red or black, then quench it in brine for hardening.
(5) When machining parts, try to create oil grooves in sleeve holes as much as possible. Some areas of the harvester are hard to lubricate. In such cases, heavy oil or grease can be used, except for nylon sleeves. Avoid replacing nylon sleeves with cast iron, copper, or aluminum, as nylon is more resistant to deformation under impact.
(6) When repairing keys and keyways on pulleys and shafts, ensure the dimensions remain unchanged. Do not increase the key size, as this could weaken the shaft. For worn keyways on the shaft, you can weld a new groove in the opposite direction of the old one. For keyways on pulleys, use a transition fit method, insert the key, and then tap it tightly using a countersunk screw.
(7) When maintaining hydraulic systems, remove the distributor and flow control valve, and use an air pump to test each line for leaks. When reinstalling hydraulic oil, make sure it is filtered and properly vented. The main focus during hydraulic repairs is the seals, and it's best to replace them entirely rather than just removing and reusing old ones.
Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your equipment but also ensures safe and efficient operation. Always follow best practices and don’t compromise on quality, even when working with limited resources.
