US Cook Medical has recently announced that its first endoscope guidewire, the Fusion LoopTip, has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This innovative device is designed to enhance the safety and effectiveness of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a procedure widely used in hospitals around the world for diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the pancreatic and biliary systems, such as gallstones, benign and malignant bile duct strictures.
During ERCP, physicians typically use a sphincter incisor or a guide wire to access the pancreaticobiliary system. However, one of the most common and serious complications associated with this procedure is acute pancreatitis, often caused by difficulties or failures during cannulation. The LoopTip guidewire, featuring a nickel-titanium core and a distal closed-loop design, offers superior resistance to twisting and maintains its shape even in complex anatomical structures. This makes it particularly well-suited for navigating curved or tortuous pancreatic ducts.
By improving the ease of insertion and reducing the risk of trauma, the Fusion LoopTip helps lower the likelihood of complications such as cannula failure, perforation, and post-ERCP adverse events. Its advanced design represents a significant step forward in enhancing patient outcomes and procedural success in ERCP procedures. Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
