Brooding is similar to other poultry care practices. It's recommended to provide water within 12 to 14 hours after hatching, commonly referred to as "boiling water and eating."
(1) Method: Once the chicks hatch, they are removed from the incubator and placed in brooders after they dry off. After they calm down, warm water should be provided in drinking fountains. This helps them regain energy. If they don’t drink water promptly, their feathers may become brittle, which can affect their overall health. Prolonged water deprivation can lead to overdrinking when water becomes available, causing diarrhea. When introducing water, each chick must learn where the water source is. To help them, you can gently dip a strong chick’s beak into the water so it drinks, encouraging others to follow.
According to some reports, placing bright-colored stones or marbles in the water container can attract the chicks’ attention. When using boiled water, it can also be combined with disease prevention or nutritional supplements. For example, potassium permanganate can be added to make the water slightly pink. During the first 1-20 days, adding 5%-8% brown sugar, glucose, or a small amount of complex B vitamin solution to the water is beneficial. Within the first three days, a 0.02% oxytetracycline solution can be added to boost immunity. The water level in the containers should not be too deep to prevent drowning. If using a duck or chicken as an open waterer, place clean stones inside to reduce splashing and keep the chicks dry. Drinking fountains should be cleaned or disinfected daily, and the area around them should remain dry.
(2) Simple Drinking Fountain Production: Drinking fountains for chicks can be made from materials like tin, aluminum, pottery, jars, or even simple ceramic bowls. A basic option is a ceramic bowl or glass jar with a plate covering the opening. Fill the bottle with fresh water, place a plate on top, flip them together, and insert a 1 cm thick wooden block at the neck to maintain a 1 cm water depth until the bottle is empty.
Alternatively, a tower-shaped fountain can be built using a pointed water storage container (like a can) and a tray. Drill a 0.5 cm diameter hole near the bottom, about 1 cm from the base, to control the water level. The tower shape prevents chicks from standing on top and contaminating the water. After drinking, the water level drops below the hole, allowing the tank to refill automatically. This ensures continuous, clean water supply. However, the water dish should not be too large or deep to avoid drowning.
