It was an incredibly spectacular night. The sky looked like a blazing prairie fire fueled by some kind of cosmic energy.
Sorry, I got carried away describing it. But seriously, my husband and two brothers always plan a special trip to stock up on fireworks enough to turn our backyard into a mini version of Times Square on New Year's Eve.
But this year? Well, let’s just say we were slightly preoccupied. By the time the holiday rolled around, there was nary a sparkler nor a whiff of gunpowder near our house. (Okay, fine, my husband did manage to dig out a couple of small fireworks for the kids, but nothing close to the usual pyrotechnic extravaganza.)
Now, before you start judging us too harshly, I have a few things to confess.
First off, since we didn’t have our own fireworks show this year, you might be wondering why these photos look vaguely familiar. And if you’re thinking they resemble images from a trip to Chicago over Memorial Day weekend, you’d be absolutely correct. Those pictures were actually snapped during that same visit—hence the exhausted expressions on our faces after hours of walking around, plus the fact that we were freezing our tails off on Navy Pier that evening.
Second confession: I haven’t taken a single photo in the last four days. Not one. To be fair, I’ve been dealing with a relentless wave of nausea over the past week and a half, which made even picking up my phone seem like too much effort. Let’s just say taking a picture of our bathroom didn’t strike me as particularly inspiring. But here’s hoping I’m finally emerging from this funk and catching glimpses of brighter days ahead.
