The animal's cry carries a lot of meaning. Researchers have discovered that poultry can be attracted to food by playing recorded sounds associated with eating. This unique behavior opens up new possibilities for understanding how animals communicate and respond to their environment. When a hen finds food for her chicks, she emits a specific sound—a kind of soft clucking or giggling. Scientists have recorded this call and played it back through a speaker placed near the food source. The result is remarkable: the chicks quickly come running to eat, even if the hen isn't physically present. This shows that the sound itself has a strong attraction, acting as a signal for food availability. However, not all chicken calls are equally effective. In one experiment, when researchers played the hen's call immediately after hatching, the newly born chicks showed no interest. But when the same call was played to chicks that had been exposed to it during their early development, they responded much more actively. These chicks grew 20% faster than those that hadn’t heard the sound before. This effect was also tested on a large-scale chicken farm with thousands of chicks. While the results were still positive, the growth advantage was smaller—only 2% to 4%. This suggests that while the hen’s call has a significant impact, other environmental factors also play a role in the development of young chickens. These findings highlight the importance of early auditory experiences in poultry and could lead to new methods for improving chick health and growth in farming environments.
