Advances in the selection and breeding of new varieties of high-quality, high-resistance forest grasses in China

Under the support of the National 863 Program, significant progress has been made in the selection and breeding of high-quality, disease-resistant forest grass varieties. This project has advanced efficient grass breeding techniques, achieved key technological innovations in rapid tissue culture propagation, and established a somatic embryonic technology platform. These breakthroughs have greatly enhanced China's forestry and grass breeding capabilities, contributing to the industrial development of forest products and the improvement of the national ecological environment. The project has filed 70 national invention patents, one utility model patent, with five invention patents granted. It has also approved 24 new species of forest grass (systems). Among them, two American poplar varieties have entered demonstration applications and are now moving toward commercialization. In terms of production, seven varieties (lines) have obtained protection rights for new plant varieties, while over ten strains are undergoing intermediate trials or trial production. Additionally, 22 new products with strong application potential have been developed. The project has trained 107 master’s graduates and 154 PhD students. Nine monographs have been published, along with 328 academic papers, including 23 indexed in SCI and EI databases. A total of 67 technical and product demonstration, pilot, and industrialization bases of various sizes have been established. Forty-four companies have participated in the research, demonstration, and industrialization of forest grass technologies. Six technology transfer results have been achieved, generating transfer fees exceeding 7.2 million yuan, and the project has generated economic benefits of 1.52 billion yuan. This comprehensive effort not only highlights the scientific and technological achievements but also reflects the growing importance of sustainable forestry and grassland development in China's environmental and economic strategies.
