Reasons why pigs do not eat

Pigs that eat less or stop eating entirely are among the most frequently observed symptoms in veterinary clinics. This condition is often linked to improper feeding practices, such as overfeeding, underfeeding, or the consumption of spoiled feed. In addition, various diseases—like febrile illnesses, gastrointestinal disorders, and other systemic conditions—can also lead to reduced appetite or anorexia in pigs. First, when a pig is sick, it may exhibit a rise in body temperature and appear lethargic, which can result in a refusal to eat. For example, chronic gastritis can significantly reduce feed intake, causing the pig to eat very little or not at all. Second, there are cases where pigs show no other obvious symptoms but still have a decreased or complete loss of appetite. These pigs may seem otherwise healthy, with normal body temperature and no visible signs of illness. However, some may display restlessness, sleeplessness, or even aggression, such as biting each other. In some instances, pigs may die without a clear cause. This could be due to several factors: (1) moldy corn consumption over a long period can lead to chronic mycotoxicosis, resulting in reduced or no feed intake. (2) High temperatures in the barn can cause discomfort, leading to stress, aggressive behavior, and a drop in feed consumption. To address this issue, prompt treatment of sick pigs is essential. If fever is present, antipyretic medications should be administered, and the underlying cause of the fever should be identified and treated accordingly. It’s also important to check the quality of the corn and other feed sources for signs of mold or spoilage. Any poor-quality feed should be replaced immediately to prevent further health issues. Incorporating digestive stimulants like Jianweisan into the feed can help improve appetite, especially in severely affected pigs that refuse to eat. Additionally, proper feeding and management practices are crucial. This includes reducing stocking density, ensuring adequate lighting, maintaining good ventilation, controlling temperature, keeping the environment clean, and performing regular disinfection to prevent disease outbreaks.
