Different types of flowers, even within the same species, have varying soil requirements during their growth stages. To help gardeners better understand and choose suitable potting materials, the following commonly used soils for general flower cultivation are introduced below:
(1) Sandy soil: This is a pure-textured, non-sticky sand with excellent drainage. It is ideal for sowing seeds, starting seedlings, and taking cuttings. It is also widely used as the main component in making potting mixtures.
(2) Garden soil: A semi-sandy, semi-clay soil that contains some organic matter. It is more suitable for planting trees or plants that prefer stronger growing conditions. Its balanced structure makes it a good base for many flowering plants.
(3) Peat soil: Slightly acidic to neutral in pH, peat soil contains a significant amount of humus. It is ideal for slow-growing, long-green flowers or for propagation through cuttings. It can also be mixed with sandy soil for general seed sowing or cutting. Peat soil is often used as a base for preparing custom potting mixes.
(4) Humus soil: Also known as leaf mold, this soil has a porous structure, is loose, and is slightly acidic to acidic. Rich in organic matter, it is particularly suitable for acid-loving plants. It is an essential ingredient in many potting mixtures and helps improve soil structure and water retention.
(5) Roadside accumulated soil: This soil is loose and has good permeability and fertility. It is commonly used for growing ordinary flowers or as part of a potting mix. It is a cost-effective option for general gardening purposes.
(6) Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shandong mud: Often referred to as orchid soil, it is slightly acidic and is mainly used for cultivating orchids. It can also be modified into a general-purpose potting mix for other acid-loving plants such as camellias and azaleas.
(7) Guangdong Tang mud: This is a fertile, clay-like pond mud that is hard in texture. It is widely used as potted soil in southern China due to its drought-resistant properties. When introduced to northern regions, it is often used for growing Jian Lan (a type of orchid) and other similar plants. Its ability to retain moisture makes it a valuable addition to many potting blends.
