(A) Field Selection and Facilities. Choose a rice field with a reliable water source, good drainage, and no risk of water leakage. Install anti-escape barriers around the paddy, using thick plastic film to create a 50–80 cm high wall that prevents turtles from escaping. Asbestos tiles can also be used for added security. Dig several trenches in the field, each about 30–50 cm deep and 40–60 cm wide, to provide shelter and movement space for turtles. In the center of the field, build a spawning station measuring 5 meters long and 1 meter wide, which can double as a mud area for turtle nesting. Place a 45-degree slope around the station made of sand, allowing turtles to easily access it for laying eggs.
(B) Turtle Species Selection. It is recommended to use aquatic species such as the Chinese softshell turtle, yellow-throated turtle, red-eared slider, snapping turtle, and silver-line turtle. Avoid using land-dwelling species like the dry-eared turtle or climbing types like the four-eyed or six-eyed turtles. Select species based on local conditions, but aim for uniformity in size and behavior to ensure even feeding and reduce competition. Turtles can be raised either alone or in mixed groups.
(C) Stocking Density. After planting the rice, introduce the turtles into the field. For breeding purposes, stock approximately 120 turtles per acre (with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1). If raising them for market, release 2000 young turtles weighing 80–100 g per acre in their first year, or 2000 hatchlings (8–10 g) for two to three years. Always select healthy, disease-free turtles to ensure better survival rates.
(D) Feeding Practices. Feed turtles regularly, in fixed amounts, and with quality food. The natural presence of insects and small aquatic animals in the rice field can reduce the need for supplemental feed. Introduce snails, loaches, or other small creatures into the field to naturally increase the food supply for turtles, lowering feeding costs. Additionally, plant edible vegetation like water spinach or linden in the field. Wild weeds are also nutritious for turtles.
(E) Daily Field Management. Since turtles consume plant-based food, avoid using herbicides. Their waste can serve as natural fertilizer, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers by about half. Maintain a water level of 6–10 cm in the field. During hot weather, frequently flush the field with fresh water to keep it clean and cool.
(F) Disease Prevention and Pest Control. Turtles help control pests in the rice fields, making insect infestations rare. Occasionally, some pests may appear on the upper parts of rice stalks. Use low-toxicity pesticides when necessary, and spray them as a fine mist to prevent them from settling in the water. Before applying chemicals, consider giving turtles a detoxification treatment and moving them to a safe area. Protect against predators like snakes, rats, and birds. The most common health issue in paddy-raised turtles is intestinal inflammation. Add a small amount of furazolidone or entericin to their feed every two weeks. Wild plants like ironweed, purslane, and groundnut have proven effective in preventing this condition. Due to the low density and good environment, disease incidence is generally low.
At the end of the season, before winter begins, turtles can be harvested and sold. Those intended for breeding the following year can be moved to ponds or indoor enclosures, where they can overwinter naturally.
