This is a deep-circulation cultivation technique, also known as a deep-flow technique. It is similar to the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), but with a key difference: instead of a thin layer of nutrient solution flowing over the roots, this system features a deeper layer, typically 5 to 10 centimeters in depth. In this setup, most of the plant roots are submerged directly into the nutrient solution, allowing for better nutrient absorption and root development. To ensure proper root health, oxygen is often introduced into the nutrient solution through aeration systems, promoting good root respiration and preventing root rot. One of the main advantages of this system is that it overcomes a major limitation of the NFT system—its inability to function properly during a power outage. Since the nutrient solution is not just a thin film but a deeper reservoir, the system can maintain root contact with nutrients even if the pump temporarily stops. This makes it more reliable in situations where electricity supply may be unstable. The basic components of this system include a nutrient solution tank, a reservoir for storing the solution, pumps to circulate the liquid, an automatic circulation system with controls, plant supports or grow channels, and sometimes a pH and EC monitoring system to ensure optimal growing conditions. Overall, this method offers a balance between efficiency and reliability, making it suitable for both commercial and small-scale hydroponic operations.
