Scorpions are currently one of the most popular medicinal materials on the market, with prices steadily increasing year after year. Despite this growing demand, the majority of medicinal use still relies on wild scorpions. Around my city, there have been attempts at introducing scorpion farming, but unfortunately, few have achieved success. To address these challenges, I engaged in extensive discussions with industry experts such as the chief pharmacist from the Lianyungang Medicinal Materials Station and Mr. Shen Yongzhen from Suyu County. Together, we explored issues like scorpion diseases, countermeasures, and artificial farming methods. Below is an overview for those interested in scorpion farming. First, when starting out, it’s important to determine the farming scale and method. Initially, the number of scorpions introduced should be moderate—starting with around 300 to 500 and up to 2,000 to 3,000 at most. Having too few scorpions can lead to higher management costs, while having too many can result in poor oversight and potential losses. Farming methods can be divided into indoor and outdoor setups. Beginners should opt for indoor farming to gain experience. Tools for farming include bottles, pots, boxes, ponds, and pits. For beginners, starting with pots is recommended before transitioning to larger setups like tanks or ponds. Additionally, there are temperature-controlled and room-temperature options, each with its own advantages. Choose based on your circumstances. Second, participating in training programs and visiting established farms is crucial. While scorpion farming isn’t overly complex, it requires attention to detail that can be challenging to convey in writing. Those serious about farming need systematic training and hands-on experience to grasp the nuances of breeding techniques. Third, prior to introducing scorpions, ensure they are well-fed on mealworms. Fourth, there are precautions to keep in mind during the introduction process. Scorpions typically reproduce between April and August according to the lunar calendar, making late April to early May the ideal time for introduction. Introducing scorpions too early can lead to losses. Currently, the market price for Shimizu scorpions is around $400-$450 per kilogram. However, some unscrupulous individuals or companies charge inflated prices for "recycled" seeds (promising a recovery price of over $600 per kilogram), so be cautious to avoid being misled. Secondly, why do scorpions tend to die? Based on observations, the primary reason for scorpion mortality is that early adopters fail to understand their habits and adjust farming techniques according to seasonal changes. In my region, temperatures during winter and spring have been unusually low, sometimes dropping to around 10°C and occasionally rising above 20°C. This fluctuation makes it difficult for scorpions to adapt, leading to mass deaths (often referred to as "spring death"). Additionally, frequent rainfall and high humidity during early spring can cause food to spoil more easily. Newly awakened scorpions also tend to overeat, often resulting in digestive issues and death. Furthermore, scorpions are highly sensitive to odors. Some farmers inadvertently introduce foreign smells like perfume, alcohol, or medications into their facilities, disrupting the scorpions' sense of smell and causing illness. To mitigate these risks, farmers must closely monitor the scorpions' habits, study their needs diligently, and strive to create an environment and diet that align with their preferences. In conclusion, while scorpion farming holds significant potential, it demands careful planning, attention to detail, and continuous learning. Success will come with patience and perseverance.
