A recent study showed that the heart implant pump system produced by the famous medical device company HeartWare can effectively prolong the life of patients with heart failure. HeartWare's 5-ounce re-implanted pumps are currently not approved for production in the United States. This new instrument will be implanted in the patient's left ventricle to help the damaged heart push oxygenated blood to other organs of the body. The researchers said at the American Heart Association meeting in Chicago that patients had a survival rate of 92% after 6 months of implantation and were further undergoing a heart transplant or disarming the pump due to good treatment.
After approval in the United States, HeartWare, Mass., will compete with Thoratec, Calif., in the $4 billion medical device market. Thoratec's 10 ounce heart implant pump generated $230 million in sales in 2009. According to Mark Slaughter, a researcher at the University of Louisville, a lower-weight pressure pump can reduce surgical trauma during implantation and require less energy.
