Celery plants are showing signs of distress, beginning with the new leaves. These leaves appear burnt and deformed, displaying irregular chlorosis between the veins and a rough texture on the stems. As the condition progresses, the leaves become thick and brittle, and cracking occurs along the stems, leading to a burned-out center. In greenhouse or protected environments, the inner leaves often develop wet rot, and the growing tip dies off. When the plants are pulled up, the roots are short, underdeveloped, and the root tips turn brown and die. Despite using various bactericides, no improvement is observed. This is due to a deficiency in boron.
After being diagnosed by agricultural experts as a case of boron deficiency, the plants showed significant improvement after being sprayed with boron fertilizer. The following prevention methods are now recommended:
Celery is highly sensitive to boron, so it's important to apply it through either soaking the seeds, using it as a base fertilizer, or applying it as a foliar spray. These three methods can effectively prevent boron deficiency from occurring.
As a base fertilizer, 0.3 to 0.5 kg of boron fertilizer per acre should be applied, either mixed with organic compost or NPK fertilizer. However, care must be taken to avoid direct contact with seeds or young roots, as this can lead to seed rot or plant death.
For foliar application, if boron deficiency symptoms are observed in the field, immediately spray the leaves with a 0.1% boron solution. Apply 40 kg per mu (approximately 667 square meters), and repeat the treatment every 5–7 days for a total of three sprays. It’s best to spray in the late afternoon when the leaves are moist but not dripping. This ensures maximum absorption and effectiveness.
By implementing these preventive measures, farmers can significantly reduce the risk of boron deficiency in their celery crops, ensuring healthier growth and higher yields.
