Japan successfully bred new eggplant varieties without pollination

The Kochi Agricultural Technology Center in Japan announced that they have successfully cultivated new varieties of eggplant that do not require pollination. The breeding experiment conducted by the center showed that the new varieties of eggplant and normal eggplant are similar in appearance, but the skin is more glossy. No wild bees and hormonal agents are required for pollination during cultivation, and no greenhouse cultivation is required. The variety has strong adaptability, low cost, time saving and labor saving, but the total output will be reduced by 5%~10% compared to other common varieties.
It is understood that the species will apply for registration of new varieties as soon as possible. As the largest eggplant production county in Japan, Kochi Prefecture is eager to promote eggplant production through variety improvement. The new varieties will be further improved to reach the goal of mass listing before 2007. At the tasting meeting for new varieties, outsiders highly evaluated the new varieties, and at the same time, they hoped that the new varieties would reduce the restrictions on the types of pesticides and sowing time and strive to achieve low pesticide production.
