The annual bloom of our bony fish fry is beginning once again. In this guide, I'll share some key techniques for cultivating flower buds into summer blooms, offering you a practical reference to enhance your fish farming process.
First, let's talk about the growth rate of bony fish. Typically, they grow for about one year, reaching sizes between 60 to 80 tails or 100 to 120 tails per catty, with an average weight of 0.2 to 0.5 catties. These fish are commonly farmed, and many fishmongers can expect to receive 0.2 to 0.5 pounds of bony fish from the market.
**1. Preparing the Fish Ponds:**
Start by draining the water completely from the fish pond. It’s best to disinfect the pond around April 10th, then order your seedlings from a reliable supplier. Fill the pond with water one day in advance. Make sure to install a mesh filter at the inlet to prevent unwanted fish or other debris from entering the pond.
**2. Stocking the Fry:**
Don’t rush to put the fry directly into the pond. Always check the weather first. If the weather is clear and mild, avoid stocking during the day when the surface temperature is high. Instead, wait until evening when the temperature is more stable. If it's been a long time since the pond was filled, make sure to stir the water gently on the surface before introducing the fry. Have someone else place the seedlings on the surface while you observe the wind direction. Choose a location where the breeze won’t blow the fry toward the edges, which could lead to their death. Also, ensure that the temperature inside the oxygen bag matches that of the pond water—avoid big differences. If there's a significant difference, let the oxygen bag sit in a cool place for about 30 minutes until the temperatures are similar. On sunny days, avoid placing the fry in ponds exposed to direct sunlight, as the temperature inside the bags can rise too quickly and harm the young fish.
**3. Feeding with Soy Milk:**
Soak high-quality soybeans until the skin is soft and smooth (use natural water). Use a grinder to extract the milk. For the first three days, use about 4 kg of soybeans per acre. Adjust the amount based on how thin the water appears. The feeding should be done evenly, like a gentle rain. When pouring the milk into the pond, walk backward and take small steps to ensure even distribution across the entire pond.
**4. Growth Monitoring:**
After 20 to 25 days, the fry should grow to about 3 cm in length. At this stage, you may consider harvesting or selling them, as they might be too small to continue growing in the current pond. Their sizes will also vary, so it’s important to monitor them closely and decide the best time for transfer or sale.
This method not only ensures healthy growth but also improves survival rates and overall yield. By following these steps carefully, you can significantly enhance the quality and productivity of your bony fish farming operation.
