The annual bloom of our bony fish fry is beginning again, and I'm excited to share some key techniques on how to cultivate flower buds into summer blooms. This guide is designed to help you understand the process better and improve your results.
First, let's talk about the growth rate of bony fish. These fish typically grow for one year, reaching sizes between 60 to 80 tails or 100 to 120 tails per catty. Their weight usually ranges from 0.2 to 0.5 catties. In the market, most people can expect to find bony fish weighing around 0.2 to 0.5 pounds. These fish are commonly farmed and sold in local markets.
Now, let's move on to the preparation of the fish ponds. Before starting, it's important to drain the water completely. Around April 10th, the pond should be disinfected. After that, order the seedlings from a trusted supplier and fill the pond with water a day in advance. It’s also essential to install a mesh filter to prevent unwanted fish or other debris from entering the pond.
Next, the stocking process. Don’t just throw the fry into the pond right away. Check the weather first. If the conditions are good, avoid stocking during the day when the surface temperature is high. Instead, wait until the evening. If there has been a long period of inactivity, you should stir the water gently before introducing the fry. Have someone place the seedlings on the surface while you observe the wind direction. Choose a spot where the wind won’t blow the fry toward the edges of the pond, as this could lead to their death. Also, make sure the temperature inside the oxygen bag matches that of the pond water. If there's a big difference, let the bag sit in a cooler area for about 30 minutes to adjust. Avoid placing the fry in ponds exposed to direct sunlight, as the temperature in the oxygen bags can rise too quickly and harm the young fish.
Another important step is feeding. Start by soaking high-quality soybeans until they are soft and smooth. Use natural water for soaking, then grind them with a mill to make soy milk. For the first three days, use about 4 kg of soybeans per acre. Adjust the amount based on the clarity of the pond water—increase or decrease slightly as needed.
When feeding, do it evenly and carefully, like a gentle rain. When pouring the milk into the pond, walk backward and take small steps to ensure even distribution across the entire pond.
After 20 to 25 days, the fry should grow to about 3 cm in length. At this stage, you may consider selling them or moving them to another pond if they're too small to grow further. The size will vary, so it's important to monitor their development closely.
This method ensures healthy growth and higher survival rates. By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to successful bony fish cultivation.
