China has developed a human body cell 3D printer

Release date: 2013-08-09

Scientists from universities such as Hangzhou University of Electronic Science and Technology have independently developed a biomaterial 3D printer. At present, scientists have used biomedical polymer materials, inorganic materials, hydrogel materials or living cells to successfully print a small proportion of human ear cartilage tissue and liver unit on this printer. The biomaterial 3D printer research and development team leader, Professor Xu Mingen of Hangzhou University of Electronic Science and Technology said that this biomaterial 3D printer has many characteristics of printing biological materials, low cell damage rate, high printing precision and convenient operation. Compared with international similar printers, this 3D printer called "Regenovo" not only realizes biomaterials and cell 3D printing under aseptic conditions, but also has a new temperature control unit and print nozzle design that can support from -5 ° C to Printing of a variety of biomaterials melted at 260 °C. Xu Mingen introduced that "Regenovo" supports live cell printing, and the printed cells have a survival rate of up to 90%. Currently, printed live cells survive for up to 4 months. However, from the "printing" of human cells, tissues and even organs, to the clinical application, there is still a long way to go. Xu Mingen said that this requires multi-disciplinary scientists to work together.
