In autumn, as the ground temperature gradually drops, the roots of vegetables begin to age more quickly. This aging process can hinder nutrient absorption, particularly calcium, leading to calcium deficiency in plants. The common signs of calcium deficiency in vegetables include the deterioration of new growth areas like the apical buds and root hairs, which may wither or die. These issues signal that calcium supplementation is urgently needed. To address this problem, foliar spraying with calcium solutions is an effective method. Calcium chloride or calcium nitrate can be used as foliar fertilizers, typically at a concentration of 0.3% to 0.5%. It's recommended to spray every 7 days, and applying it 2 to 3 times can significantly improve the condition. For tomatoes, focus on spraying both the upper and lower leaves near the inflorescence, including 2 to 3 leaves. For cabbages, start spraying when the plant enters the heading stage. To enhance calcium uptake, you can add auxin substances like naphthalene acetic acid to the solution. A mixture of 0.7% calcium chloride and 50 ppm naphthalene acetic acid works well. Make sure to mix the solution thoroughly before applying it to the plants. This combination not only improves calcium absorption but also supports overall plant health and development.
