In a groundbreaking medical procedure, a Swedish hospital has successfully treated a patient with acute myocardial infarction using a novel "cold therapy" approach. The treatment was first implemented at Lund University Hospital and marked a significant step forward in cardiovascular care. The 76-year-old patient is currently recovering well and is expected to be discharged within a few days.
The technique involves inserting a catheter into the patient’s body and circulating an ice-cold solution to rapidly lower the core body temperature to below 35°C for about 20 minutes. This controlled cooling aims to reduce the damage caused by the heart attack. To ensure the patient's comfort during this process, medical staff also used warming pads to maintain the surface temperature of the body, preventing excessive discomfort from hypothermia.
This innovative method was developed by Professor Eliner from Lund University’s cardiology department and doctoral student Uliwijkona. Their goal was to minimize the risk of complications such as heart failure and arrhythmias by managing the body’s temperature during a critical period after a heart attack. According to preliminary research, cold therapy has shown promising results in animal studies, reducing the risk of myocardial infarction by up to 50%. Early intervention appears to yield better outcomes, making timing a crucial factor in the success of the treatment.
Swedish medical authorities are now considering expanding the use of this therapy. A planned trial involving 200 patients will help determine its long-term effectiveness and safety. If successful, this could revolutionize how heart attacks are treated globally, offering a new tool in the fight against one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
