Researchers are currently using nanotechnology to develop medical dressings that can diagnose and treat infected wounds. Scientists at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom collaborated with the Burns team at the França Hospital, Bristol Children's Burns Centre in the southwest of England to study this advanced medical dressing. This dressing is initiated by pathogenic bacteria, releasing antibiotics from the nanocapsules and targeted treatment prior to infection with the pathogen. The dressing changes color when releasing antibiotics to alert health professionals that the wound has been infected.
Dr. Toby Jankins, project leader at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, said: "This dressing is only initiated by pathogenic bacteria. Toxins produced by pathogens can break capsules containing antibiotics and dyes. This means antibiotics only Release when needed, reducing the risk of evolution of resistance to new antibiotics by superbugs such as staphylococci."
Dr. Amberyan of the França Hospital in Bristol Children's Burns Centre in the southwest of England will be a clinical consultant for the project. If the skin is infected, the conventional dressing must remove the infected skin to treat, which delays the child's healing time. At the same time, the process is painful. This advanced dressing speeds up the treatment because it automatically releases antibiotics when the wound is infected, which means that the dressing does not need to be removed, increasing the likelihood of flawless healing of the wound. Color change as an early warning system for infections allows us to speed up treatment, reduce trauma to our children and the time we have to stay in hospital."
