Have you ever seen a tree that blooms like flowers growing directly on its branches? According to a recent report from Guangzhou Lanpu, there's an unusual tree standing about 3 meters tall in the eastern part of the flower garden. This tree is currently in full bloom, with clusters of purple blossoms resembling small mushrooms, creating a striking and beautiful sight. The blooming has lasted for over two months, drawing many visitors who are fascinated by its unique appearance.
This special plant is called *Bauhinia variegata*, commonly known as fork leaf wood. Native to Mexico, it produces vibrant purple flowers that grow directly on the main trunk or older branches. It typically blooms in summer and continues into autumn, with only a few flowers appearing later. There are only eight species of this plant worldwide, and this one is the only species found in China. Due to its unusual growth pattern and stunning visual appeal, it has become a rare and valuable ornamental tree in Chinese horticulture.
According to staff at Lanpu, while the park is mainly known for its orchid collections, it has been cultivating various rare and exotic trees for over half a century. In total, more than 5,000 trees have been planted across the area. In addition to the fork leaf wood, the park is home to several other unusual species, such as the giant Mexican cedar and the red millet tree, which flowers throughout the year. Lanpu also houses two ancient *Podocarpus* trees, each over 200 years old—rare finds in Guangzhou. These trees not only add to the park’s beauty but also serve as important botanical specimens for research and education.
