In recent years, as the area of fertilizer application has expanded continuously, improper fertilization practices have gradually become a growing concern. To reduce the cost of chemical fertilizers and minimize their environmental impact, it is essential to diversify fertilizer sources and apply scientific fertilization techniques to improve efficiency. This approach not only helps in saving resources but also supports sustainable agricultural development. One effective strategy is to expand the use of green fertilizers and make full use of grass. First, promoting the cultivation of green manure before rice fields can enrich the soil with organic matter. Second, planting dry crops in advance and incorporating 20–30% legumes into the rotation system can enhance nitrogen fixation. These legumes can be plowed back into the soil or intercropped between rows to improve soil fertility. Third, maintaining grass cover between dryland crops helps retain moisture, reduce soil erosion, suppress weed growth, and prevent crop lodging. It also improves soil structure and enhances the overall effectiveness of fertilizers. Balanced fertilization based on target yields is crucial. Within a certain range, there's a positive correlation between fertilizer application and crop yield. However, excessive or frequent applications can disrupt the nutrient balance, leading to reduced productivity. Therefore, it's not always true that more fertilizer means higher yields. For example, producing 100 kg of rice requires about 1.85 kg of nitrogen, 0.85 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, and 2.1 kg of potassium oxide. Similarly, 100 kg of cotton lint needs approximately 12 kg of nitrogen, 4 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, and 12 kg of potassium oxide. Proper balancing ensures that nutrients are available when needed, prevents interference among fertilizers, and avoids unnecessary input, ultimately reducing costs. Deep fertilization should be practiced to manage water effectively. Applying fertilizers directly into the soil reduces volatilization and air pollution, while also preventing runoff into water bodies. When irrigation is insufficient, it’s important to apply enough water to regulate fertilizer concentration and avoid damage caused by high salt levels. Properly mixing fertilizers with water ensures optimal nutrient uptake and minimizes waste. Increasing the use of organic fertilizers can further enhance soil health. Although farmyard manure and compost release nutrients slowly, they provide a well-rounded supply of nutrients and have strong adsorption properties. When combined with chemical fertilizers, organic materials can absorb and slowly release nutrients, extending the availability period and reducing wastage. Improving fertilizer formulations and regulating nutrient supply peaks is another key step. This includes creating broad-spectrum compound fertilizers, developing specialized fertilizers tailored to specific crops, and using slow-release technologies. Combining inorganic and bio-organic fertilizers into particle-based formulations can offer complementary benefits. For instance, enzyme-based bio-organic compound fertilizers can be applied early or later to match the peak demand for nutrients, ensuring maximum efficiency and sustained yield improvement.
