Feeding and management characteristics of lactating sows
The management objectives for lactating sows are twofold: first, to increase milk production in order to support the healthy growth and development of piglets, and second, to reduce sow mortality during the lactation period, ensuring that they return to estrus promptly after weaning. To achieve these goals, the following measures should be carefully implemented:
First, attention must be given to the feeding regimen before and after farrowing. The feed quantity should be gradually increased to ensure a smooth rise in milk production postpartum. It is especially important to avoid overfeeding immediately after birth. In many farms, excessive feeding after farrowing can lead to sows refusing to eat on the first day, consuming large amounts of energy, and then experiencing high feed intake followed by weakness, indigestion, and even vomiting in the following days. This can lead to mastitis, fever, and diarrhea in piglets. Therefore, careful monitoring and controlled feeding are essential.
Second, the lactation diet should provide a higher level of energy and protein, with special attention to the quality of the protein. Including fish meal in the feed is beneficial, and about 5% soy lecithin or other fat supplements should be added to enhance nutrient absorption and milk quality.
Third, green feed should be provided appropriately, and clean, fresh water must always be available to ensure proper hydration and digestion.
Fourth, before and after weaning, the feed amount should be gradually reduced. Ideally, the daily feed should be decreased from 5.0 kg to 2 kg or even 1 kg during the first week after weaning. On the day of weaning, reducing the feed helps encourage piglets to eat more, while also preventing mastitis in sows.
Fifth, if sows show signs of low milk production, the underlying causes should be analyzed and treated accordingly. For example, if a sow is weak and not producing milk, increasing high-protein and high-energy feeds can help. If the sow is overweight, adding more green, juicy feed along with some medications may be necessary. Medications such as oxytocin injections or traditional Chinese galactagogue formulas can also be used. Mixing fish soup into the feed, especially with carp, can further stimulate milk production.
Feeding requirements for lactating sows should start from the 7th day postpartum, allowing free access to feed. A typical daily amount is around 1.5–2.0 kg, depending on the number of piglets. During hot weather, feed 3–4 times a day, and 2–3 times in colder seasons. Avoid continuous use of antibiotics in piglets, and aim to introduce solid feed early to reduce the sow's workload. Early weaning is recommended, ideally between 28 to 35 days, to improve overall productivity and sow health.
