Three methods for controlling fruit pests in autumn
Trunk coating is an effective method for controlling pests such as aphids, golden flower beetles, red spiders, and apple scale on fruit trees like hawthorn and cherry. The application involves spraying dimethoate onto the trunk, approximately 2 meters above the ground. Once absorbed by the tree, the insecticide is transported throughout the entire plant. When pests feed on the treated areas, they become poisoned and die, especially if they come into contact with the coated surface. For better results, it's recommended to cover the treated area with plastic film to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.
When dealing with borer pests such as longhorned beetles, pupa mosquitoes, and pine shoot borers that infest trunks, branches, and bark, a different approach is needed. If wormholes are visible on the tree’s surface, a syringe can be used to inject the pesticide directly into the holes. If fresh frass (excrement) is found around the entrance, it indicates the presence of larvae inside. In such cases, injecting 1-2 ml of 40% omethoate solution into each hole and sealing it with mud can effectively prevent the insecticide from evaporating. This technique can control up to 95% of pests within the wormholes. However, when the wormholes are not visible—such as in the case of gnat-mosquitoes that create large "tumors" on trunks and major branches—it is necessary to drill small holes into these growths. About three holes are made, and 1 ml of omethoate solution is injected into each to target the hidden pests.
Another method involves directly embedding the pesticide into the root zone. First, dig a circular trench about 0.5 to 1.5 meters away from the tree's base. Then, place 3% carbofuran into the trench. Young trees require 100–150 grams of the product, while mature trees need approximately 500 grams. This method helps control leaf-feeding pests, particularly aphids, and provides protection for up to one to two months. Alternatively, the root bottle method can be used. Fill a plastic bottle with 40% omethoate diluted five times. Dig around the base of the tree to expose the roots, then insert the bottle into a suitable root (no thicker than a finger). Secure the bottle so that the root end is at the bottom. Finally, wrap the bottle in soil using plastic to keep it in place. As the roots absorb the pesticide, it will be distributed throughout the tree, effectively controlling pest infestations over time.
