Autumn sheep has a particular stress
In autumn, particularly in late autumn, the weather turns cool, and there's an abundance of pastures with plenty of grasses available. The harvest season has passed, and crops are plentiful, making it the ideal time for sheep to thrive.
1. **Choosing the Right Pasture**
During autumn, shepherds should select high-elevation pastures or mountainous areas that are not affected by winter conditions. In late autumn, as the temperature drops, it’s best to graze in grassy valleys where the sheep can walk less and eat more. This helps them conserve energy while maximizing their intake of nutritious forage.
2. **Grazing Timing**
When there's no frost, it's ideal to let the sheep out early in the morning and bring them back late in the evening, extending grazing hours as much as possible. If needed, night grazing can be introduced to ensure they get enough food. However, after the first frost, it’s important to return the sheep later in the day to avoid them eating grass that has been covered in frost, which can be harmful.
3. **Flock Management**
Sheep grow rapidly during this time and are very active, so proper management is crucial. When moving through gates, make sure to control the flow of sheep to prevent overcrowding. Avoid letting them cross ditches or run around during grazing, as this can cause injuries. Also, be cautious with pregnant ewes to prevent miscarriages. When entering a new pasture, allow the sheep to eat the fresh grass first before introducing them to new areas.
While grazing in fields with pods, keep the time limited to avoid overeating, which can lead to bloating. Avoid feeding sheep on regrowth from sorghum or corn fields, as these can be toxic. Even though the seedlings may look tempting, they should never be fed to the animals. Additionally, do not let sheep drink from stagnant water sources or lie in wet, muddy areas, as this increases the risk of parasite infections.
By following these practices, shepherds can ensure their flocks remain healthy and well-nourished throughout the autumn season.
