Samantha Payne, founder of Open Bionics, a British 3D printed prosthetic expert, introduced her company's 3D printed prosthesis at the WIRED Next Generation event on November 5.
There are several companies in the world who want to provide amputees with affordable DIY prostheses, of which Open Bionics does a great job. Bristol's designers are known for their 3D printed Ada Hand, who also makes prosthetics for children, including the Star Wars prosthetic and these Iron Man and Frozen Prosthetics. Ada Hand's 3D printed files and schematics are available for free download, and the company also sells pre-made versions for 569 ($709).
Many people who need prosthetics (especially children) have psychological disabilities, so most prosthetic manufacturers make the prosthesis as realistic as possible. Open Bionics has a different view: children who need prosthetics can reinvent themselves, and the scope of this transformation is very broad. Of course, some children will want to be close to real prosthetics, but others may be the opposite – they want to be superheroes.
